Bike Fit
When you go shopping for clothes, do you buy just any shirt or pair of pants, or do you only buy the stuff that fits? How about shoes? Those are a little more specialized, aren't they? They have that Brannock device thing to measure your feet in length and width to make sure the shoes you try on will fit you, right? What if I told you that the same can be said for bicycles, and that we here at MSBC even have some cool equipment - like a Brannock device, only different - to measure you and make sure you fit on your bike properly? (Wow, that's a lot of questions for an introductory paragraph. My HS English teacher would probably have something to say about that...)
This year MSBC began offering fit services to our interested customers. A bike fit session is fairly important if you are buying a road, gravel, or mountain bike and you want to make sure you get the bike "dialed in" for your specific size. We will offer this as part of a new bike purchase, or you may schedule a "retro-fit" to make any adjustments needed on your current ride. Did you buy a used bike from someone and you want to make sure it works for you? We can do that, too.
How does it work? Well, it's a combination of some math, some science, a little prior knowledge and experience, and some training that the staff has completed. There is also some new equipment to assist us, and of course there's an app for it all, too. So far Keith and Sarah are doing appointments, and we hope to add a couple other staff as well.
We will do some measuring of various body parts, angles, and distances, which then helps us come up with a bike to fit you, or adjustments we need to make to your current ride. There are parts on a bike that are fixed, like the frame size, but there are also some easily adjustable ones, like the handlebar stem length and height (and the bar width, as a matter of fact), the seat height, etc. All of these work together to give you the most comfortable, efficient ride possible. I like to spout my totally made-up statistic that 90% of discomfort on a bike - pain, numbness, etc. - is due to poor bike fit. It's made up, but I bet I'm close.
Find the bike fit information on our website. You can fill out a contact form and we will schedule an appointment for you. Plan on 30-60 minutes, depending on your needs. Prices will vary with the length of time we spend, and we do offer a discount for members of the MSBC team. We'd love to spend some time with you making sure you're as fast or as comfortable as you can be on your bike!
